Functional fitness is based upon the client being taught to exercise in a predominantly “closed-chain”, ground-based position. The majority of the exercises begin with your own bodyweight instead of external resistance so that you can learn to stabilize the body in a manner replicating day-to-day activities.
This style of training strengthens the important core musculature necessary for improving or maintaining healthy posture. There is very little space requirement or expensive equipment purchase for this type of training. With the exception of a few functional training units, most of your equipment is comprised of stability balls, light dumbbells, bands, tubes, ropes, chin-up bars, wobble boards, balance discs and mats.
